SOU ties ACU thanks to De Dios Cruz's 89th-minute equalizer

GLENDALE, Ariz. Ariel De Dios Cruz's hot start continued late Saturday night with his most dramatic goal yet, an 89th-minute equalizer that salvaged a 1-1 draw for Southern Oregon against Arizona Christian at ACU Field.

The Raiders dictated the run of play throughout the contest, mounting a 25-4 shots advantage, but found themselves down 1-0 after ACU's Josh Flanagan scored less than three minutes into the second half. His was the first shot on goal for the Firestorm, generated by pressure past midfield and an Elijah Meade assist.

With 1:19 remaining, De Dios Cruz gave the Raiders a long-awaited breakthrough on their ninth on-target attempt. Irwin Leon served the ball into the box following a throw-in, and it came to De Dios Cruz on a couple bounces from Harry Cullen for a straight-on strike that he lined inside the right post with his first touch.

The result made the Raiders 3-0-1 and the Firestorm 1-0-1.

De Dios Cruz – who also accounted for the lone goal in SOU's 1-0 victory Thursday at Ottawa (Ariz.) – became the first Raider in team history to have goal involvements in four consecutive games to start a season. The sophomore from Eugene is already up to four goals and one assist.

Leon, Jonathan Gaspar and Papa Yansane each produced two shots on goal for the Raiders.

SOU's defense required goalkeeper Casey Ruvolo to make only one save. ACU's Emiliano Vega made eight.

The Raiders will bring their unbeaten record back home to face Simpson (Calif.) in another nonleague contest on Thursday. It's scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
