Bresee's 83rd-minute PK gives SOU draw against Northwest

ASHLAND – Junior defender Kaylah Bresee stopped Northwest (Wash.) from souring Southern Oregon's Cascade Conference-opening homestand with a late penalty kick that saved a 1-1 draw for the Raiders on Sunday morning at Laurel Field.

SOU (4-1-1 overall, 1-0-1 CCC) spent most of the day playing from behind after the Eagles' Gracie VanAscche passed through the defense to set up Hailey Deese inside the box for a right-to-left strike that found the net in the sixth minute.

The advantage held until the 83rd, when SOU's Macie Yannoni found space on an advantage to take a shot that NU keeper Katie Snow knocked away on a dive. Snow then lunged and swatted at the ensuing loose ball but caught the leg of Raider forward Tori Lasch and inadvertently brought her down, prompting a whistle and putting Bresee at the penalty area.

Snow, who made six saves and denied Emily Hyde's PK earlier in the half, had no chance to stop Bresee's attempt, slotted inside the left post on a line.

The teams have tied each of the last two seasons. The Eagles (4-3-1, 0-1-1) remained unbeaten in their last seven matchups with SOU.

Bresee's goal was her first of the season. It was one of seven on-target shots for SOU, which got three saves from goalkeeper Brittany Standley.

The Raiders have just one loss through their first six games for the third time in team history.

They're home again next week, facing rival Oregon Tech at 12 p.m. Friday. The Owls are off to a 2-0 start in CCC action.
