Walla Walla keeps streaking past SOU

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The upstart Walla Walla (Wash.) volleyball team completed a Cascade Conference-opening statement weekend with a 25-13, 25-16, 25-23 upset of No. 19 Southern Oregon late Saturday night at Windemuth Court.

The Wolves improved to 4-1 behind Sahara Browning, the reigning NAIA Attacker of the Week, who totaled 18 kills on 35 attempts. They were a day removed from sweeping Oregon Tech, and eight days removed from knocking off then-No. 11 Montana Western.

The Wolves had only taken one set from SOU (3-6 overall, 0-2 CCC) in the previous 18 matchups combined.

Their fortunes have turned thanks to Browning and Yaimaris Garcia, a 6-foot freshman setter from Cuba who accumulated 26 assists and eight kills in leading WWU to a .241 attacking average.

Andressa Ribeiro Soares paced the Raiders with five kills and seven digs. Friley Curtis and Bella Cormack assisted six blocks apiece. Jadyn Daviscourt chipped in two service aces.

WWU's Paula Flores, a sophomore Argentinian, had seven kills and 16 digs to help sink SOU to a .241 attacking average.

Life won't get any easier for the Raiders when they return home next week. They'll host top-ranked Eastern Oregon at 6 p.m. Friday and No. 10 College of Idaho at 4 p.m. Saturday.
