ASHLAND – Southern Oregon played with more fire and came out clean again on Friday afternoon at Lithia Motors Pavilion, rallying back from 14 points down to win 83-73 against Walla Walla (Wash.) and take over sole possession of first place in the Cascade Conference.
Bryce Dyer hit a career-high five 3-pointers on 10 attempts as part of his 16th career double-double, a 15-point, 11-rebound effort that bumped the Raiders to 14-7 overall and 11-2 in the CCC. They outscored the last-place Wolves (0-19, 0-13) by 24 over the final 16-plus minutes thanks also to season-highs from
Jack Chlumak (13 points) and
Trey Neff (10 points, 4 assists) off the bench.
SOU has won five in a row and is one game up in the loss column on a trio of three-loss teams that includes Saturday's 5 p.m. guest, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho). LCSC knocked Oregon Tech out of a first-place tie with an overtime win in Klamath Falls on Friday.
The Raiders have needed to erase double-digit deficits in five of their 11 conference wins and have now played 12 consecutive clutch games. They got themselves in the latest pickle by missing their first 10 attempts from 3 during a first half in which WWU shot 54 percent. The Wolves stretched their 10-point halftime advantage to 52-38 when Jordan Jackson turned a steal into a bucket with 16:44 left.
Back-to-back triples from Dyer and
Brady Rice started the Raiders' charge. They still trailed 63-57 at the nine-minute mark when an
Emmett Fenz 3-pointer started an 11-0 run topped off by two more Dyer 3s.
Rice finished with seven points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
Elijah Jackson posted 11 points and seven assists, and
Joe Juhala beefed up his stat line in the clutch to amass nine points, seven boards, two blocked shots and two steals.
The Raiders overcame 39% shooting by taking care of the ball: they committed only eight turnovers and parlayed WWU's 13 into 21 points.
Jackson scored a game-high 22 points for the Wolves. Soren Dalan, a 7-foot junior, recorded 17 points and 18 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes, and Reese Snellman hit 4-of-6 from deep.
In their seven remaining regular-season games, the Raiders will play all four of the other teams that make up the top-five in the standings. LC State is the only one they'll get at home as they attempt to avenge the 72-65 loss they took in Lewiston four weeks ago.
