ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon men's soccer team was happy to take a win however it could get one on Friday afternoon, topping Walla Walla (Wash.) 1-0 at Raider Stadium's Laurel Field.
The Raiders stopped a four-game winless streak by getting
Mustafa Daggig's lone goal six minutes into the contest. That was all they had to show for the 21 shots they accumulated, but they prevented the Wolves from putting a single attempt on frame.
At 10-3-3 overall and 6-3-2 in the Cascade Conference, they've now turned in double-digit win totals in all 11 full seasons of the program's existence.
WWU (3-8-3, 3-5-3), seeking its first-ever postseason appearances, dropped into a tie for eighth place with Oregon Tech for the eighth and final CCC Tournament spot entering the teams' upcoming head-to-head matchup.
Daggig's scoring contribution was his third in his last three games. He has helped the Raiders go 1-0-2 during the stretch and cling to fourth place in the standings, just two points out of second. With a win in Sunday's 1 p.m. regular-season finale against Warner Pacific, they'd be guaranteed no worse than the No. 3 seed in the tournament.
Daggig scored in transition, taking a feed from the right side to the middle of the field from a patient
Jonathan Gaspar, who let the run develop before passing off to his senior teammate for a 24-yard lined strike.
Gaspar, like Daggig, has enabled the Raiders to stay near the top of the table of late with a goal and two assists over the last three games.
The Wolves finished without a shot on goal for the first time this season. The shutout was SOU's fourth of the season and first in five games.
