No. 1 SOU, No. 2 OCU split championship rematch

OKLAHOMA CITY – In a rematch of last year's NAIA World Series championship round, top-ranked Southern Oregon and No. 2 Oklahoma City appeared worthy of pushing each other again while settling on a split Thursday afternoon at Ann Lacy Stadium.

The Stars claimed Game 1, 5-2, by plating five runs during a fourth-inning rally that Tara Hoehner punctuated with a tiebreaking three-run home run. The Raiders were 8-3 winners in Game 2, riding Lexi Ramirez's complete game and a two-RBI, two-run effort by CiCi Kim.

The Raiders, who defeated OCU to win both their first national title in 2019 and their fourth in 2025, went to 9-3 overall entering the NAIA SB Invitational. The Stars went to 5-1.

High winds contributed to uncharacteristically shaky defense for both teams as they combined for 12 errors on the day. The Raiders – after taking a 2-0 Game 1 lead on RBI singles from Elysia Duarte and Avery Coffin – committed two behind ace Ayla Davies during OCU's decisive bottom of the fourth inning. They preceded Hoehner's opposite-field blast, which put Stars pitcher Brynlee Alsip in the driver's seat.

Only one of the two runs Alsip allowed was earned, and she left nine SOU baserunners stranded in a seven-inning performance.

Defensive miscues bit the Stars in Game 2, where their three errors led to five unearned runs. The Raiders took a 6-1 lead with two runs in the second and four in the third as Kim laced RBI singles and scored in both.

Kalea Thomas had three hits, Vanessa Lang went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, and Coffin was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored in the offensive onslaught.

Ramirez, meanwhile, improved to 3-0 while working around four Raider errors. She allowed six hits, walked two and struck out one. The junior was charged with two earned runs and has now pitched three consecutive complete games, surrendering just three earned runs over her last 21 innings.

The Raiders will play six more on their Oklahoma trip. They'll start Friday at 10 a.m. PT against Benedictine (Kan.) and at noon against No. 16 Missouri Baptist.
