CHICKASHA, Okla. –
Ayla Davies picked up her eighth victory with a shutout as the No. 1-ranked Southern Oregon softball team wrapped up its eight-game Oklahoma swing with a split against No. 9 Science & Arts, winning 6-0 before losing 5-3 on Sunday at Bill Smith Ballpark.
Davies scattered six hits in her third defeat of a Top 25 opponent, and
Ari Williams gave her the lead with a single that plated
Vanessa Lang in the third inning. The Raiders (14-4 overall) broke it open with four runs in the fourth, as Lang hit a two-run double,
Kalea Thomas drew a bases-loaded walk and Williams logged another RBI on a groundout.
Thomas tacked on an RBI single in the fifth, and Williams had an assist from center field in the sixth to keep the Dovers (8-2) scoreless. Lang had two hits, as did
Kierstin Grotewiel and
Lexi Ramirez, who both doubled.
USAO pitcher Lakelynn Thompson allowed only one earned run while completing Game 2, and Isabella Portillo's solo home run started a four-run second inning for the Dovers.
The Raiders cut the deficit to 4-3 after Grotewiel's RBI single in the third and a two-run error in the fifth, but they left 11 runners stranded and couldn't push anyone else across.
Grotewiel and Lang both had two more hits in the contest.
The twin bill marked the Raiders' final tune-up for Cascade Conference play, the opening weekend of which coincides with the opening of SOU's new Laurel Park. No. 3-ranked Eastern Oregon comes to Ashland for a four-game series with doubleheaders scheduled to start at 1 p.m. next Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday.
