ASHLAND – A haymaker of a gut-punch likely ended Southern Oregon's season on Wednesday night, as Cory Johnson hit three straight free throws with one-tenth of a second on the clock to give Bushnell a 71-70 win in the quarterfinal round of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
The No. 3-seeded Raiders (17-12) appeared to have the game wrapped up when, holding a two-point lead,
Jace Anderson rebounded Beacon guard Roy Bunn's miss inside and was fouled with 1.2 seconds left. But after Anderson missed his first double-bonus free throw, he clanked the second intentionally and Johnson grabbed the rebound, took one dribble, and drew a foul while attempting an 85-foot heave.
The No. 6-seeded Beacons (14-14) hadn't won a CCC tournament game in 10 years. They'll be at home in Saturday's semifinals against No. 7 seed Corban, which was a 78-70 upset winner at No. 2 seed Eastern Oregon.
Johnson, a senior forward and the reigning CCC Player of the Week, finished with game-highs of 25 points and eight assists to go with seven rebounds and a pair of blocks. He also found Squeeky Johnson for a 3-pointer that gave the Beacons life with 46 seconds left, trimming SOU's advantage to 70-68.
Johnson, Kaleb Burnett and Ashton Harvey contributed 12 points apiece for Bushnell.
All-CCC guard
Elijah Jackson went out with 17 points and four assists for the Raiders. He broke a tie with 6:05 left at the free-throw line, then put in his final field goal with a 3 that made the score 66-61 on SOU's next possession.
Anderson totaled 13 points and nine rebounds for the Raiders.
Bryce Dyer had 11 points, eight boards, three assists and two steals.
Gio Evanson scored 10 with six assists and
Joe Juhala supplied seven points and eight boards.
Trey Neff scored all seven of his points in the first half, helping the Raiders to a 42-38 lead at the break.
SOU had reached the semifinals in each of the previous seven postseasons.
