Raiders cap trip with 1-1 day at Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. Lexi Ramirez successfully worked in and out of trouble in another complete game, leaving 11 runners stranded to help Southern Oregon recover from a 2-1 loss with a 4-1 win in a split with Biola (Calif.) on Monday afternoon at Freedom Field.

Ramirez, a day after holding Westcliff (Calif.) without an earned run in her first win as a Raider, took Game 2 again and survived despite allowing 12 hits. The junior right-hander struck out six without a walk and ended the performance in appropriate fashion, snagging a bases-loaded liner with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning and firing to third for a double play.

Redshirt-freshman left fielder Elysia Duarte had a two-homer day for the Raiders, who went 6-2 on their season-opening trip. Both were solo home runs to center field, the first to give SOU a 1-0 lead in the third inning of Game 1.

Biola (5-5 overall) – the NCAA Division II PacWest Conference's defending champion – pushed across the tying run in the fourth inning and the game-winner in the sixth as Mikala Huskey gapped a two-out RBI double. Kayla Bousquette won the pitchers' duel against Ayla Davies, who dropped to 3-1 despite limiting the Eagles to six hits.

In Game 2, the Raiders gave Ramirez a 2-0 cushion before she entered the circle. Kalea Thomas singled and Vanessa Lang doubled to start the top of the first; they came in on Brooke Nordahl's squeeze bunt and an Ari Williams sacrifice fly. Duarte tacked on her second blast in the fifth inning and CiCi Kim's RBI groundout pushed across Nordahl for the final run in the sixth.

Nordahl and Thomas had two hits apiece in the contest. Lang led the Raiders with four hits on the day, including a pair of doubles.

Ramirez improved to 2-0. During the trip, SOU's pitching staff combined for a 1.62 ERA.

The Raiders are on the road again Friday to play another NCAA DII team, Jessup (Calif.).
