Garret Butler, a longtime fixture of the local football scene, enters his fifth season as a tight ends coach for Southern Oregon in 2016.
A native of Fresno, Calif., Butler was an offensive tackle for the 2004 College of the Siskiyous football team coached by Matt Sayre, now SOU’s director of athletics. Butler later played semi-professionally and served as the head coach for the Southern Oregon Renegades in Medford. In 2009-10, he was an offensive and defensive line coach at North Medford High under former Raider head coach Jeff Olson.
At SOU, Butler has helped an offensive line that’s been the anchor of multiple record-setting teams, including the 2014 NAIA championship squad, and has been essential in the development of the Raiders' tight ends.
Butler has one daughter, Ellie, who is 5 years old.
