Malcolm Munson, a longtime fixture of the local volleyball scene, enters his fourth season as an assistant on Southern Oregon University’s staff in 2024. Additionally, he has been director of the Rogue Valley Volleyball Club since 2020 and overseen 14 Raiders who have served there as coaches.
Since joining head coach Josh Rohlfing’s bench in 2021, Munson has been part of two runs to the NAIA National Tournament. In 2023, he aided a 28-7 season in which the Raiders finished No. 12 in the NAIA Top 25.
Munson’s prior experience was at the prep level, most recently North Medford High, where he was the head coach from 2017-20 and was named the Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in his first season. He previous stops included Klamath Union and Mazama High, and he coached all three of his daughters in high school: Kaylene, who went on to play at New Mexico and Portland State, Allanah, who went on to Fresno Pacific and Fresno State, and Telsche.
Munson taught for 36 years, primarily social and world studies, before his retirement in 2020. He spent the last 20 of those in the Medford School District.
A college basketball player at Concordia University-Portland, he earned a bachelor’s degree from University of Arizona in 1985. He and his wife, Michele, have been married since 1981 and also have three sons: Anthony, Monzell and Kendall.
