ASHLAND, Ore. -- The Southern Oregon University athletic department is planning a fundraising effort to name the Raider Stadium track the Dan Bulkley Track after the longtime coach and SOU Sports Hall of Famer, the department announced Friday.

The project has a goal of $100,000, with all money going toward improvements of the track and field facility. The expected dedication date is set for Fall 2012.

"This is a great chance to both honor a great man and SOU legend like Dan Bulkley and also make some much needed improvements to the track and field facility," SOU Athletic Director Matt Sayre said. "This is a great project that the school is behind 100 percent."

The effort is spearheaded by former SOU athletic director, track & field coach and emeritus faculty member Monty Cartwright and longtime SOU women's coach and emeritus faculty member Sally Jones.

Bulkley served as a coach and professor at SOU from 1950-77. He started the tennis program in 1950, the track & field program in 1952, the cross country program in 1955 and the ski program in 1965.

As coach of the SOU track & field program, Bulkley's teams won seven conference and three NAIA regional titles. His athletes won 117 individual conference or regional titles, and at the NAIA level two athletes won national championships and 11 earned All-American honors.

Bulkley's impact can be felt outside the SOU community within Ashland, the Rogue Valley and on the national and international level.

Bulkley was a catalyst in the development of Mt. Ashland and was on the ski patrol for many years. He is still a member of the local Nordic Club and teaches cross country lessons every year.

Even at the age of 93, Bulkley continues to inspire everyone by competing in national and international track and field, cross country and downhill skiing and racket events. Because of his success, he holds numerous age group world records
