ASHLAND Melvin Mason (Vacaville, Calif./Vacaville) was named the NAIA Football Offensive Player of the Week and Motade Atanda (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) the Cascade Conference Red Lion Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, the national and conference offices announced.

Atanda and Mason, two of the more explosive performers currently on Southern Oregon University's campus, both went off in the span of a few days last week.

Atanda, a senior outside hitter, turned 60 percent of her attacks into kills while going for 13 and 17 in Raider sweeps of Corban and Northwest Christian, respectively, last Thursday and Friday. Her attacking average was .440 for the matches, and she also picked up 25 digs.

The Raiders (8-2 overall, 2-0 CCC) were named the co-Cascade Conference Adidas Team of the Week, sharing the honor with the Oregon Tech volleyball team, which swept the same opponents and will visit SOU at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Atanda has tallied at least 12 digs in seven of 10 matches and reached 10 digs or more four times.

Mason had his time in the spotlight Saturday, when the sophomore running back helped 22nd-ranked SOU (2-0) upset No. 2 Carroll, 38-35. Mason scored a career-high three rushing touchdowns as he ran 27 times for 202 yards – the second-best mark of his career.

Mason won the same award after last season's third week, when he hit up Sacramento State for 290 total yards and three total TDs. He was also selected as the Frontier Conference Player of the Week on Monday.

Against Carroll, he had six carries of 10 yards or more, including a 40-yard TD dash in the second quarter.

In his last six games dating back to 2013, Mason is averaging 117.5 yards per contest and 6.7 per carry.
