5/13/2016 9:41:00 PM

Correction: SOU's Matt Williams was left out of the original 1,500-meter results. He placed 3rd to become All-Cascade Conference. Natalie Berania, who was 11th in the women's 1,500, has also been added.

HERMISTON – The Southern Oregon University men wore out the awards podium and the women rewrote two school records Friday on the first of two days of the Cascade Conference Track & Field Championships at Hermiston High's Kennison Field.

Vying to get back on top after their streak of three straight team victories was snapped by Eastern Oregon last year in Ashland, the Raider men claimed five titles through the first 11 disciplines – already more than they won at the entire 2015 meet (four) – as Zach Beltz (long jump), Rohan Cain (high jump), Jared Hixon (1,500 meters), Tylor King (shot put) and the 4x100-meter relay team (school and meet records) all triumphed. With 10 events to go, College of Idaho is clinging to a slim lead in the team race (104 points) ahead of SOU (100) and EOU (82).

For the women, sophomore Jessa Perkinson continued her assault on the school-record books with her third program-best mark of the season to place second in the 1,500 meters, and the Raider 4x100 team of Tierra Barrett, Rakayla Tyler, Loghan Sprauer and Margot Hamman placed second with a Raider record of its own. The Raiders are in fifth place with 37 points, while three-time defending champ has a commanding lead with 108.

SOU's dominance in the men's field events, put into historical context, was surprising. Beltz, who entered as the No. 2 seed, gave the Raiders their first long jump title in 13 years with his top mark of 24 feet 1 1/2 inches, the second-best in SOU history. Cain was the No. 3 seed, but the top entry was absent and the No. 2 seed failed to register a height, so his mark of 6-2 3/4 gave the Raiders their first high jump title in nine years. King was the top seed and won by over five feet at 53-4 1/2 for SOU's first shot put title in five years.

Kevin Tunnell also scored with a fourth-place finish (46-6 3/4) in the shot put, while in the hammer throw Brian Sievers was fourth (149-6) and Tunnell eighth (130-10).

The 4x100 win was SOU's sixth in seven years and good for another school record. Julius Shellmire, Zac Hannan, Hayden Saparto and Cameron Bremner combined to finish in 41.31 seconds – topping the previous SOU benchmark of 41.58, the previous meet record of 41.43 and beating EOU by over half a second. In addition, they became automatic qualifiers for the NAIA Championships.

In the 1,500, Hixon (who redshirted last season) had placed fourth at the 2014 NAIA Championships but had been all-conference before his win. As the top seed and already and NAIA Championships qualifier, he clocked 3:53.76 to clear second place by a couple seconds, and Matt Williams added a personal-best of 3:57.08 to take third place as the fifth seed and become All-CCC for the first time.

The Raider men scored more points (14) than anyone in 3,000-meter steeplechase with four scorers: third-place Kevin Poteracke (9:36.74), fourth-place Eli Stillman (9:44.34), seventh-place Ben Stevens (10:07.60) and eighth-place Donnie Coulson (10:10.44). They also had two 400-meter scorers in third-place Cedric Quartey (49.64) and sixth-place Saparto (50.25). Caleb Diaz added a seventh place in the 10K (32:48.45), which C of I used to jump into the lead by claiming five of the top-six spots for 30 points.

For the women, Perkinson – who had previously taken down SOU's 5K and 10K records and is favored to win Saturday's 5K – did it again in the 1,500 with a time of 4:33.42 that was seven seconds faster than her qualifying time, two-tenths of a second off the win and made her an auto-qualifier for the NAIA Championships in a third event. The previous SOU record was 4:36.50, established last year by Jessie Rozario.

The women's 4x100 team of Tierra Barrett, Rakayla Tyler, Loghan Sprauer and Margot Hamman topped a four-year-old school record (48.15) by finishing second to EOU (47.62) in 48.02 – trimming over eight-tenths of a second off their qualifying time.

The Raiders didn't produce any other All-CCC performances but got fifth-place finishes from Braana Weber in the steeplechase (12:05.88), Loghan Sprauer in the high jump (4-11) and Hannah Lambert in the shot put (38-6 3/4); and sixth-place finishes from Barrett in the 400 (58.71), Jocelyn Schmidt in the 10K (41:24.96) and Marisa D'Orfani in the steeplechase (12:06.22).

Saturday's events will start off in the field at 11 a.m.
