Despite a season-best 20 kills by senior
Mia Wortel (Estacada, Ore./Estacada), the 21st-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team fell to Eastern Oregon 25-20, 30-28, 16-25, 16-25, 15-13 tonight in La Grande, Ore.
Eastern Oregon defeated SOU for the second time this year, snapped SOU's 10 match win streak and improved to 14-7 overall and 11-2 in Cascade Conference play. SOU fell to 13-8 overall and 11-2 in conference action.
Wortel continued her amazing play over the last month, finishing with 20 kills and just one error for an attack percentage of .559.
Sarah Holgen (Honolulu, Hawaii/Ashland) added 14 kills and sophomore
Leah Bergstrom (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) finished with 13 kills and only one error. Junior setter
Lindsey Stone (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) had 59 assists and 12 digs.
Maggie Rivers (Salem, Ore./McNary) finished with 15 digs.
Grace DeBoodt led Eastern with 13 kills and 17 digs.
After a pair of close sets resulted in a 2-0 Eastern lead, the Raiders turned it on in the third set. SOU held the Mountaineers to a -.148 attack percentage to get back in the match and then hit .250 in the fourth set to even the match at 2-2.
In the third set, the two teams were tied at 11-11 following a kill by Samantha Yutzie and an Eastern error.Eastern responded by scoring the next two points and the Raiders couldn't catch up.
With the 20 kills, Wortel moved into sixth place all-time on Southern's career kills list with 1,064.
The Raiders travel to the College of Idaho Saturday night.
