Wortel Leads SOU Past T-Birds

A perfect night by senior Mia Wortel (Estacada, Ore./Estacada) helped Southern Oregon defeat Cascade College 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 tonight in McNeal Pavilion.

The Raiders improved to 14-9 overall and 12-3 in Cascade Conference play. Cascade fell to 6-16 overall and 1-14 in league action.

Wortel finished the night with nine kills and zero errors. With those nine kills, Wortel moved into fifth place on SOU's Career Kills list with 1,083 kills. Wortel also finished with six blocks.

Leah Bergstrom (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) was also perfect on the night for the Raiders, finishing with eight kills and no errors in nine attempts for an attack percentage of .889.

Maggie Rivers (Salem, Ore./McNary) had 13 digs for the Raiders.

The Raiders made quick work of the Thunderwolves in the first two sets, holding the guests to attack percentages of .033 and .029.

In the third set, the Thunderwolves battled and cut the SOU lead to 21-18 before a kill by SOU's Leanne Stennett (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito) pushed the advantage of 22-18. Megan Bartling (Medford, Ore./North Medford) added a kill and then an ace by Dolores Christensen (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) gave the Raiders a 24-18 lead to end Cascade's threat.

Natalie Forgan led Cascade with 12 kills.
