Mia Wortel (Estacada, Ore./Estacada) helped the 12th-ranked Southern Oregon University volleyball team to a split on Day 2 of Concordia-Irvine's Crowne Plaza Labor Day Volleyball Festival.
In the morning, SOU defeated Hope International 25-22, 25-17, 25-23 and then the Raiders fell to fourth-ranked Biola 25-13, 25-8, 25-14.
The Raiders wrap up the preseason 2-5, with all five setbacks coming to ranked teams. SOU opens Cascade Conference play Friday with preseason conference favorite College of Idaho at McNeal Pavilion.
In the win over Hope International, Wortel led the Raiders with nine kills and just one error for an attack percentage of .471. Wortel also had a hand in five blocks. Samantha Yutzie finished with eight kills and
Sarah Holgen (Honolulu, Hawaii/Ashland) had seven. Junior setter
Lindsey Stone (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) had 30 assists for SOU.
Yutzie helped finish off Hope in the first set with a pair of late kills to break open a 19-19 tie. The second set featured an 8-3 SOU run and the Raiders held Hope to a -.111 attack percentage. In the last set, Wortel gave SOU a 22-21 advantage with a kill and then errors by Hope gave the Raiders the victory.
In Saturday's finale, Holgen led SOU with five kills, while Yutzie and freshman
Megan Bartling (Medford, Ore./North Medford) finished with four kills each.
