Sophomore outside hitter Samantha Yutzie's 11 kills were not enough as the Southern Oregon University volleyball team fell to NCAA Division II Western Oregon 25-16, 25-19, 25-14 today in Monmouth in a matchup between sister schools and former Cascade Conference rivals.

The Wolves improved to 7-1 on the young season. SOU dropped to 3-7 overall and returns to Cascade Conference action Friday night as they travel to Evergreen State.

Yutzie finished with 11 kills in 34 attacks, while teammate senior Mia Wortel (Estacada, Ore./Estacada) added eight kills and just one error.

Wortel led the Raiders in the opener. The middle blocker accounted for three straight SOU points with three kills and tied the first set at 12-12. But an 8-1 run by the Wolves forced an SOU timeout at 20-13 and it wasn't long before WOU wrapped up the set.

In the second set, Yutzie cut the WOU lead to 17-16 with a kill and then added another kills to get the Raiders within 20-17. The Wolves made sure the Raiders wouldn't get any closer as they closed out the set with kills by Lisa Martini and Haley Kostrba.

The finale was all Western as the Wolves held SOU to a .057 attack percentage.

Leanne Stennett (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito) led SOU with 10 digs, while junior setter Lindsay Stone finished with 31 assists and six digs.

Sharon Peterson led the Wolves with 10 kills, while Danielle English had 16 digs.
