Senior middle blocker Mia Wortel (Estacada, Ore./Estacada) became the seventh Southern Oregon volleyball player to go over 1,000 kills in a career tonight as the Raiders knocked off Northwest Christian 25-20, 25-10, 25-14 in Eugene.

The Raiders have now won six straight matches and improved to 9-7 overall and 7-1 in Cascade Conference play. The Raiders still have not dropped a set during that winning streak. Northwest Christian fell to 5-10 overall and 0-8 in conference play.

Wortel, who needed seven kills to reach 1,000, went for a match-high 13 kills with no errors for a .591 attack percentage. Sophomore Samantha Yutzie had eight kills for the Raiders. Junior setter Lindsey Stone (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) had a match-high 34 assists and seven digs. Maggie Rivers (Salem, Ore./McNary) finished with 12 digs and Becky Johnstone (Lake Arrowhead, Calif./Rim of the World) added 11 digs.

Heather Porter (Coos Bay, Ore./Marshfield) came through with a kill to give SOU an 18-12 lead in the first set and it looked like the Raiders would cruise from the opening whistle. But Northwest Christian went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to one. Sophomore Sarah Holgen (Honolulu, Hawaii/Ashland) ended the run with a kill and a pair of errors by the Beacons gave SOU a 23-19 lead and they would then put away the first set.

The second set was all SOU, as an 8-1 lead quickly became a 20-9 Raider advantage and then a 25-10 victory.

Northwest Christian led 12-11 in the third set before SOU went on a 10-0 run to erase all of the Beacons' momentum. Wortel had five kills during that stretch.

The Raiders travel to Warner Pacific (Friday) and Cascade College (Saturday) next weekend.
