The 12th-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team used big matches by senior Mia Wortel (Estacada, Ore./Estacada) and freshman Sarah Holgen (Honolulu, Hawaii/Ashland) to score a 25-14, 26-28, 25-19, 25-22 victory over ninth-ranked College of Idaho.

Southern Oregon is now 3-5 overall and 1-0 in Cascade Conference play. College of Idaho fell to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in conference action.

Holgen finished with a team-high 13 kills for the Raiders. Wortel had 11 kills and four blocks. Junior setter Lindsey Stone (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) finished with a match-high 46 assists.

The Yotes were led by Sarah Buhler's match-high 18 kills.

The Raiders came out on fire in the first set, hitting .500 as a team and holding the Yotes to a .027 attack percentage.

In the second set, the two teams were tied at 20-20 before a Wortel kill and ace by Maggie Rivers (Salem, Ore./McNary) gave SOU a 22-20 lead.

After the Yotes cut the lead one, Wortel added another kill and a attack error by the Yotes gave Southern set point at 24-21. But the Yotes responded with four straight points to take a 25-24 lead and after the two teams traded points, COI won the set 28-26.

SOU took the early advantage in the third set as a Yote service error and attack error gave the Raiders a 16-11 lead and the Raiders never looked back.

The fourth set was much of the same as after the two teams were tied at 10-10, SOU went on a 6-2 run to take control and put the match away.

The Raiders had three players in double-digits with digs. Rivers led the Raiders with 16 digs, followed by Becky Johnstone (Lake Arrowhead, Calif./Rim of the World) with 13 and Samantha Yutzie with 11.

Yutzie and Leah Bergstrom (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) had nine kills for SOU, while Heather Porter (Coos Bay, Ore./Marshfield) had seven kills and only one error.

The Raiders host Eastern Oregon Saturday night at 5 p.m.
