A pair of fourth quarter interceptions helped Humboldt State escape with a 15-14 victory over Southern Oregon tonight at Raider Stadium.

The victory gives the NCAA Division II Lumberjacks a 1-1 overall record, while the NAIA Raiders fell to 1-1.

Trailing 15-14 late in the fourth quarter, SOU had two final drives to take the lead - but both ended in interceptions and both times the offense was moving the ball into Humboldt territory.

The first came after the Raiders had driven the ball 51 yards on seven plays to the Humboldt 25-yard-line, but senior quarterback Bryan Lee-Lauduski (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad)'s pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage and fell into the arms of Humboldt linebacker Casey Neligh.

The Southern defense responded and forced the Jacks to punt on fourth down after tackles-for-loss by Anthony Scolamieri (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos) and Nate Pirak (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale).

With the ball back and 2:29 on the clock, again the Raiders pushed the ball down the field and had a first-and-10 at the Humboldt 29 when Lee-Lauduski's pass was picked off by Humboldt's Justin Price to put the game away.

SOU came out and put points on the board early, with Lee-Lauduski connecting with Brandon Stout (Tacoma, Wash./Bellamine Prep) from 42 yards out. The extra point was missed and SOU had a 6-0 lead with 13:43 still left in the first quarter. The score was Stout's third touchdown of the season.

Senior kicker Corey O'Neill added a 28-yard field goal with 5:16 left in the quarter for a 9-0 advantage.

Humboldt closed out the first quarter scoring with a field goal.

SOU added a safety after Humboldt's punt team snapped the ball over the punter's head and out of the end zone for a 11-3 lead at the half.

Humboldt scored in the third quarter on a 27-yard pass from Mike Proulx to Matt Smith to cut the lead to 11-9.

In the fourth quarter, O'Neill nailed a 19-yard field goal to push the Southern advantage to 14-9, but Humboldt answered right back - thanks to a trick play.

On first-and-10, Humboldt ran the wide receiver pass as Kevin Miles caught a lateral and then found Mike Streck-Woodward for a 46 yard gain. Proulx then scored from eight yards out to give Humboldt the 15-14 advantage.

That score set up SOU's final two drives.

Lee-Lauduski finished the night 28 of 47 for 343 yards. Senior Darryl Price (Corona, Calif./Ontario) caught nine balls for 129 yards as seven Raiders caught passes.

Kenrick Baker led SOU with eight tackles, while Scolamieri had seven tackles and three tackles-for-loss.

As a team, SOU finished with 393 yards of total offense and Humboldt finished with 303.

Five Lumberjacks combined for 164 yards of rushing.

SOU travels to NCAA Division IAA Sacramento State next Saturday.
