The second-ranked Southern Oregon wrestling team went 2-0 today and advanced to Sunday's semifinals of the NWCA National Dual Meet Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The Raiders (10-1) opened up the tournament with a 23-10 victory over 15th-ranked Cumberlands and then knocked off 7th-ranked Missouri Valley 28-12 in this afternoon's quarterfinals.
Southern Oregon battles sixth-ranked McKendree in the semfinals. Top-ranked Lindenwood and fourth-ranked Dickinson State will face each other in the other semifinal. The semifinals start at 11 a.m. (CST).
"We wrestled ok," Southern Oregon head coach Mike Ritchey said. "We started off a little flat, but we started to get it rolling. It's good to get experience wrestling in this type of environment."
Mitchell Lofstedt (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) (125 pounds), Barry Johnson (Dayton, Ore./Dayton) (141), Chase Locke (Tualatin, Ore./West Linn) (197) and John Bates (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) (Hwt) all went 2-0 for the Raiders on the day.
"Mitchell did a great job starting us off right in both duals," Ritchey said. "Barry is wrestling pretty good and Bates beat a pair of good opponents and is wrestling tough."
Senior Trevor Lofstedt (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) helped the Raiders jump out in front against Missouri Valley with a 1:45 pin of Jesse Knott at 133. SOU won the first three matches of the dual and after Missouri Valley won at 149, Tommie Hooper (Burns, Ore./Burns) helped put the match out of reach at 157 with a pin of Jacob Guernsey in 6:15.
Locke and Bates closed out the match with back-to-back victories.
