TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
PARK CITY, Kan. – Southern Oregon closed in on its first top-four trophy since 2015 on Day 2 of the NAIA Men's Wrestling Championship. Thanks to 125-pound sophomore
Isaac Hampton and 197-pound junior
Asher Ruchti, the Raiders also set their sights on ending an 11-year individual title drought.
On Friday at Heartland Credit Union Arena, Hampton and Ruchti advanced to the finals, where they'll both face the top seeds in their respective brackets, and three more Raiders clinched All-America status.
Sophomore 141-pounder
Tyler Rhue, a No. 13 seed, joined Hampton and Ruchti in the semifinals before finally losing and can still place as high as third. Junior 157-pounder
Avant Stepherson and senior 184-pounder
Adrian Chavez-Morales will wrestle in seventh-place matches.
SOU is in fourth place with 77 points entering the final day of the tournament, sitting behind Grand View (Iowa) (163 ½), Life (Ga.) (134) and Oklahoma City (86 ½), and clinging to a 1 ½-point lead over Doane. Saturday's matches begin at 9 a.m. PT. The finals are slated for a 5 p.m. start.
Hampton's championship bout will be particularly pertinent to the team standings as he faces Doane's Ray Ray Harris, who prevailed by sudden victory in a matchup between the wrestlers at the NWCA-NAIA National Duals. Seeded No. 6 at 125, Hampton opened Day 2 with a 6-4 upset of Missouri Valley's No. 3 seed Haden Hernandez in which he broke a tie just before the final whistle with a reversal. His semifinal was more comfortable: he jumped out to a seven-point lead in the first period against No. 10 Braydon Pacheco of Friends (Kan.) and cruised to a 12-6 decision.
Ruchti came up big to while becoming a two-time All-American – first avenging a January loss to Indiana Tech's No. 6 seed Nathan Critchfield, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, then knocking off Life's No. 2 seed Gio Jackson with a second-period escape that gave him the only point of their semifinal match. Seeded No. 3, Ruchti will take on two-time national champion Garavous Koekabakilaho of Grand View in his final. Koekabakilaho has won both of their previous matchups by decision, most recently in the Reno Tournament of Champion finals.
Rhue, after taking down the 141-pound bracket's No. 4 seed in the Round of 16, knocked off No. 12 Arojae Hart of Central Methodist in a 4-1 quarterfinal sudden victory. Logan Wagner, the No. 8 seed from Marian, stopped his championship chase in the semis with a 4-2 win.
Stepherson, the No. 7 seeed at 157, won his second and third consecutive consolation matches against the Nos. 4 and 15 seeds before losing to No. 8 Hunter Hobbs of Providence (Mont.) for a spot in the consolation semis. The No. 4-seeded Chavez-Morales dropped a tight quarterfinal, registered a technical fall in his first consolation match and lost by fall in his second.
Braylin Ruchti (174) and
Elias Corona (197) both came up one win short of All-America spots for the Raiders.
