TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
PARK CITY, Kan. – Southern Oregon stands in fifth place with four quarterfinalists and five more individuals who got through the opening day of the NAIA Men's Wrestling Championship on Thursday at Heartland Credit Union Arena.
Championship hopes are still alive for 125-pounder
Isaac Hampton, 141-pounder
Tyler Rhue, 184-pounder
Adrian Chavez-Morales and 197-pounder
Asher Ruchti, who were each perfect through their first two matches.
Kyle Sieminski (125),
Avant Stepherson (157),
Cole Zoller (157),
Braylin Ruchti (174) and
Elias Corona (197) kept their seasons going in the consolation brackets.
Only four teams – those ahead of SOU in the standings – produced more quarterfinalists than the Raiders: first-place Grand View (8), second-place Life (10), third-place Oklahoma City (5) and fourth-place Southeastern (5). Only Grand View and Life have more total wrestlers still in the tournament.
Asher Ruchti, a junior and SOU's highest seed at No. 3, is a win away from becoming an All-American for the second year in a row in the 197-pound bracket. He outscored his opponents 26-1 on the day, defeating Graceland's KJ Fry and his teammate Corona both by major decision. The team's other top-four seed, Chavez-Morales at 184, won by major decision in the first round and by 9-3 decision over Concordia's No. 13 Chris Wohlrley in the second.
Hampton, the No. 6 seed at 125, followed up his Cascade Conference title with another strong performance, winning by 8-1 decision in his opener before registering a third-round pin of Montreat's Kane Bryson in the second round. Rhue, another CCC champion and the No. 13 seed at 141, won his first match by fall and his second by upset – taking down No. 4 Andrew Voiles of Southeastern in a 10-6 decision.
Sieminski had to win two straight consolations to stay alive after losing to the top seed at 125 in his opener. Corona,
Braylin Ruchti, Stepherson and Zoller were all victorious in their first matches and recovered from second-round losses.
Jackson Potts (174) contributed a consolation win before getting eliminated with
Dylan Clark (141) and
Kolton Malone (149).
Action resumes at 9 a.m. PT on Friday.
