Southern Oregon looks to build on last week's victory at Azusa Pacific this Saturday when they travel to Humboldt State.
The Raiders (2-4) and Lumberjacks (3-3) kickoff at 6 p.m.
Southern Oregon knocked off Azusa Pacific last weekend 20-13 behind a heroic day by sophomore running back
Brandon Baldwin (Palo Cedro, Calif./Foothill) and an impressive second half defensive performance.
Baldwin ran for 278 yards on 44 carries and one score in winning the NAIA Independent Offensive Player of the Week honor and he helped rescue an SOU offense that had been having trouble moving the ball in the last three weeks.
“He's a great running back because of who he is and his attitude,” SOU head coach Steve Helminiak said. “He never wants to come out of the game and always wants the ball. His biggest critic is himself. Teams are focusing on him and other guys need to step up and make some plays.”
Baldwin now has 848 yards and ranks third in the NAIA with 141 yards rushing per game.
The SOU defense held Azusa to just 262 yards and gave up only three points in the final three quarters.
“They settled down a little bit as the game went along,” Helminiak said. “It was a long trip and a lot of waiting around before the game and sometimes the adrenaline will get the best of you. They did nice job of shutting down their running game and defending the pass.”
Humboldt State's record says 3-3, but 12 points separate them from a 6-0 record. The NCAA Division II Lumberjacks fell to fourth-ranked Central Washington 34-27 last week. The Lumberjacks' three loses have all come in Great Northwest Athletic Conference games.
Humboldt has been going with a two-quarterback system on offense. Last week, Mike Proulx went 7-for-10 for 117 yards and two touchdowns and Chris Bolt went 9-for-17 for 124 yards and two scores.
Defensively, the Lumberjacks rank 25th in D-II for scoring defense - giving up an average of 18.5 points.
“They are a really improved football team,” Helminiak said. “They are more disciplined and believe they can win.”
