The 12th-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team played shorthanded and still scored a 25-20, 25-17, 25-15 victory over Concordia tonight in Portland.
Southern Oregon improved to 17-2 overall and 11-1 in Cascade Conference play. The Raiders and College of Idaho continue to be in a first place tie. Concordia fell to 11-7 overall and 8-3 in conference action and fell a match back of the Raiders and Yotes in second place.
Due to illness, the Raiders were playing without a number of players and a head coach and assistant coach.
Sarah Holgen (Honolulu, Hawaii/Ashland) had 11 kills to lead the Raiders and
Natalie Scheller (Bend, Ore./Bend) had a career-high 10 kills. As a team, the Raiders hit .386.
Mariana Toscano led Concordia with 10 kills.
Concordia jumped out to a 7-2 lead before SOU came back with a 9-2 to run to take the lead in the first set. The set was knotted a 18-18 when Scheller went off for three kills to allow the Raiders take control of the set.
Dolores Christensen (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) had a pair of sevices aces in the second set to lead the Raiders to victory and SOU wrapped up the match in the third set after jumping out to an 11-1 lead on a kill by Holgen.
Angela Spieker (Bremerton, Wash./Central Kitsap) had 17 assists and
Caryn Westrick (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake) had 16 assists for the Raiders.
SOU travels to Warner Pacific Saturday night.
