Raiders-Cougars Looking For A Turnaround

10/8/2009 11:34:40 AM

Both stuck in one-win seasons, Southern Oregon and Azusa Pacific both look for a breakout game Saturday at Azusa.

The Raiders and Cougars kickoff at 6 p.m. Saturday night.

Southern Oregon is 1-4, having dropped four straight after a season-opening victory over Eastern Oregon.

Azusa Pacific is 1-5, opening the season with four straight losses.

The matchup features two of three NAIA football programs West of the Rockies, both schools have schedules that are filled by NCAA Division I, II and III teams.

SOU leads the series between the two teams 7-3, including winning the first four and the last three.

Sophomore receiver Matt Davis is the star of the offense for the Cougars. Davis is averaging 101 yards per-game and 21 yards per-catch. Sophomore quarterback John van den Raadt is completing 52 percent of passes and is averaging 158 yards a game.

Defensively, Jay York leads Cougars with 65 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, one sack, one interception and one forced fumble.

“The quarterback does a nice job of running the offense and does a lot of good things,” SOU head coach Steve Helminiak said. “The defense does some unconventional things that create some confusion and we have to be ready for it.”

SOU will be looking for a way to jump start a offense that has slowed to a halt.

The Raiders were held 131 yards of offense against Western Oregon and the week before had under 60 yards of offense in the first half against Linfield.

Even with everyone gunning for him, sophomore running back Brandon Baldwin (Palo Cedro, Calif./Foothill) ranks fifth in the NAIA with 114 yards per-game.

Sophomore Paul Sweeney (South San Francisco, Calif./Sared Heart Cathedral) should return as the starter this week after freshman Alex Miller (Mountain View, Calif./Aragon) got the start against Western Oregon.

“Right now Paul's skills are better suited for what they do defensively,” Helminiak said.
