SOU-Azusa Pacific Boxscore 

The Southern Oregon softball team split a pair of games at today's SOU Raider Invitational in Medford at U.S. Cellular Park.

The Raiders (2-4) defeated Puget Sound 8-0 in the opener and then fell to Azusa Pacific 13-5 in the second game.

Both teams will take part in the final day of the Invitational Saturday. Azusa and SOU will play again at Noon. SOU will also host Simpson University Sunday in Medford at 1 p.m.

The victory over Puget Sound was all about freshman pitcher Jordyn Kurtz (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium).

Kurtz struck out six and gave up only two hits, both of which came in the fifth and final inning thanks to the eight-run rule.

The Washington all-state product got the Raiders going in the opener with a two-run triple to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead.

With Kurtz mowing down the Loggers, the lead stayed at 3-0 until the bottom of the fifth when SOU took off.

Kathryn Moy started it off with a single and two hits and two Puget Sound errors later the Raiders had the 8-0 victory.

Justine Fulton (Reno, Nev./McQueen) led SOU offensively by going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Strohm Fouty (Polson, Mont./Polson) had a pair of hits for the Raiders.

In the setback to Azusa, it was the defense that again let the Raiders down.

SOU committed five errors, including four during a three inning stretch in which Azusa scored all 13 runs and only one of those earned.

The Raiders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Kurtz.

In the third, Azusa took advantage of SOU's mishaps. An error on a putout attempt helped prolong the inning and the Cougars scored four runs on three hits and one SOU error.

The Raiders bounced back and plated four runs for a 5-4 lead, highlighted by a two-run double by Fouty.

But it all fell apart in the fourth as Azusa scored seven runs on only three hits, but two SOU errors.

Azusa ended the game early in the fifth with two runs.

Fouty had two of SOU's seven hits.
