The eighth-ranked Great Falls wrestling team won three of the first four matches and then held on for a 28-12 victory over 12th-ranked Southern Oregon in front of one of the biggest crowds in the last few years at McNeal Pavilion.
The Argos (1-0) and Raiders (0-1) will both take part in Saturday and Sunday's SOU open.
Great Falls opened the dual with a 14-4 major decision victory by Akmal Adilov at 125 pounds and after SOU's
Jared Dalgleish (Kelso, Wash./Kelso) scored a 9-3 victory at 133, Great Falls ran off back-to-back victories for a 10-3 lead.
Junior
Tommie Hooper (Burns, Ore./Burns) brought the McNeal Pavilion fans to their feet with a last second 6-4 victory over third-ranked Michael Hader. With the match tied at 4-4 with under 20 seconds left in the final period for the victory. After the Argos were penalized a team point, the Raiders had cut the lead to 9-6.
Ross Mosher put the Argos back in control with a major decision victory at 165, but back came the Raiders at 174.
Seventh-ranked
Austin Vanderford (Ninilchik, Alaska/Ninilchik) pinned ninth-ranked Noah Halton in 2:01 to cut the Great Falls' advantage to 13-12.
Top-ranked Michael French had his hands full at 184 with SOU's
Tyler Thomas (Salem, Ore./McKay) before pulling out a 7-5 overtime victory to push the UGF lead to 16-12.
"Austin brought us back into match, but we couldn't follow through after that," SOU head coach
Mike Ritchey said. "They seemed to want it a little more then we did tonight. We had some young guys out there and they looked a little afraid at times. But it's early in the season. We just need to get used to wrestling harder and finishing matches."
The Argos iced the match with a pin by Levi Morgan at 197 and Juan Enriquez at Heavyweight.
