Southern Oregon junior pitcher
Karri Johnson (Delta, British Columbia/Sands Secondary) turned in a pair of brilliant performances as the Raiders split a Cascade Conference doubleheader with Northwest Christian today at University Field.
The SOU defense let down in the opener as Northwest Christian scored a 6-4 victory. Southern Oregon came back to win the nightcap 7-0.
Southern Oregon (12-18, 8-8) hosts Corban Saturday at 11 a.m. Northwest Christian (13-23, 3-11) hosts Oregon Tech in Eugene.
Johnson had her best game as a Raider in the opener.
An error on an infield popup in the second inning was the only thing keeping Johnson from being perfect through the first six innings.
In the seventh, with the Raiders holding a 2-0 lead, Johnson went to work with a no-hitter still alive.
NCU's Brooke Davis walked to lead off the inning and then the Raider defense disappeared.
A throwing error put another runner on and allowed Davis to score to cut the lead to 2-1. Cassie Bishop then broke up the no-hitter with a single to right. A fielder's choice that resulted in the Raiders not getting an out and another error on a ground ball gave the resulted in a 4-2 Northwest Christian lead and the end of the game for Johnson.
The Raiders finally got out of the inning after giving up six runs on three hits and three huge errors.
A pair of walks in the bottom of the frame brought the Raiders to life and
Meghan Laughlin (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) cut the lead to 6-4 with a two-run double, but that would be it for the Raiders.
Johnson's line showed six-plus innings of work, seven strikeouts, one earned-run, one hit and one walk.
Offensively, Laughlin and Kathryn Moy both had two hits for the Raiders.
Johnson took the ball again for the Raiders in the second game and was equally impressive.
The SOU ace held the Beacons scoreless through her four innings of work, giving up three hits and striking out two.
Freshman
Jessica Flores (Corning, Calif./Corning) finished off the shutout with three hitless innings.
The Raiders got the bats going to support the strong pitching.
In the second inning, Ryana Okimoto singled to right to drive in a run for a 1-0 lead.
Justine Fulton (Reno, Nev./McQueen) opened the third with a double to right and scored on a triple by Laughlin. Senior
Danielle Stratton (Klamath Falls, Ore./Mazama) then singled to right to drive in Laughlin for a 3-0 lead after three.
Flores hit her first career home run in the fifth to push the lead to 5-0 and the Raiders wrapped up the scoring with a pair of runs in the sixth.
Karla Alvarez (Modesto, Calif./Johansen),
Emily Matekel (Colfax, Calif./Colfax) and Moy led the SOU offense with two hits each.
