BELTON, Tex. – Southern Oregon's three-game winning streak came to an end Saturday afternoon as the Raiders fell 52-12 to NCAA Division III Mary Hardin-Baylor in front of a crowd of more than 2,000 at Tiger Field.
Mary Hardin-Baylor, ranked No. 4 in the latest Div. III poll, improves to 6-0 with the win, while the Raiders fell to 3-4 after the loss. Southern Oregon returns home next weekend to host Simon Fraser in the 2011 homecoming game, Saturday at 2 p.m. at Raider Stadium.
Southern Oregon opened the scoring with a field goal on its second possession, but turnovers would plague the Raiders as the Crusaders built a big first-half lead. The Raiders turned the ball over four times in the opening half with a pair of fumbles and a pair of interceptions. Mary Hardin-Baylor took advantage of the Raiders' miscues to score on six of their nine first-half possessions – including five touchdowns – in building a 38-9 halftime lead.
The Raiders' lone touchdown drive of the game was a three-play, 52-yard drive late in the second quarter. SOU quarterback
Austin Dodge (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview) connected with
Manny Barragan (Yreka, Calif./Yreka) for a 13-yard pass on the opening play of the drive, and after an incompletion Dodge hit
Mike Olson (Colfax, Calif./Colfax) with a 39-yard scoring strike. The Crusaders' blocked
Tyler Crowley (Palo Cedro, Calif./Bishop Quinn)'s point-after attempt, leaving the Raiders with nine points after the score.
Mary Hardin-Baylor finished the game with almost exactly double SOU's offensive yardage with a 512-258 advantage. The Crusaders picked up 279 yards through the air and 233 on the ground, while the MHB defense limited SOU to only 47 rushing yards on 33 attempts.
Dodge finished 15-for-29 on pass attempts for 212 yards and one touchdown with a couple interceptions. LiDarral Bailey threw for 279 yards and three scores on 22 attempts for the Cru and led both teams with 85 rushing yards on 15 attempts with a touchdown. Olson led the Raiders with four catches for 50 yards with the one touchdown, while Damian Davis posted a game-high six catches for 158 yards with a score for MHB.
