SOU Volleyball's Winning Streak Reaches 10 with Sweep of Evergreen

OLYMPIA, Wash. –
Southern Oregon out-hit Evergreen by 1.037 in the third set as the Raiders closed out a 3-0 sweep (25-6, 25-22, 25-7) of the Geoducks in Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball action Friday night at CRC Gymnasium.

With the win, No. 15 SOU improves to 16-4 overall and 13-2 in conference play. Evergreen falls to 0-16 overall and 0-15 in the CCC. The Raiders return to action tomorrow night, when they travel to Kirkland, Wash., to face Northwest.

Southern Oregon used a 10-point streak as part of a 16-3 run to open the first set. The Raiders closed out the set with an eight-point streak, punctuated by a Caryn Westrick (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake) service ace to clinch the 25-6 victory.

The second set was much tighter throughout. Evergreen scored two of the first three points, and the set was tied at 6-5 early. Southern Oregon used a four-point streak to take a 9-6 lead and never let the Geoducks closer than two points the rest of the way, although ESC hung within five throughout as SOU eventually closed out the 25-22 victory on Stephanie Peshlakai's attack error.

The third set was all SOU. Evergreen took a brief lead at 2-1, and the Raiders put together a 24-5 streak the rest of the way and earned the match victory on a Renee Yomtob (Boise, Idaho/Centennial) service ace. Southern Oregon hit .625 in the finale, with 11 kills and only one error in 16 attempts, while Evergreen hit -.412 with nine errors and only two kills in 17 attempts.

Sarah Holgen (Honolulu, Hawaii/Ashland) led both teams with 14 kills and Becky Johnstone (Lake Arrowhead, Calif./Rim of the World) added 11 digs for the Raiders. Westrick finished with a team-high 12 assists, with Angela Spieker (Bremerton, Wash./Central Kitsap) tallying 11 and Krista Novelli (Lancaster, Calif./Paraclete) adding eight in the win. Jasmine Horton led EOU with 10 kills, but SOU limited her to a -.071 attack percentage.
