PORTLAND, Ore. – Southern Oregon limited Concordia to a .099 hitting percentage as the 18th-ranked Raiders swept the Cavaliers 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-23) in Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball action Friday night at Cavalier Gymnasium.
With the win, Southern Oregon improves to 11-4 overall and 8-2 in conference play. Concordia falls to 10-7 overall, 5-5 in the CCC. The Raiders return to action tomorrow, when they'll visit Warner Pacific for a conference match at 7 p.m.
The Raiders dominated the opening set, outhitting the Cavaliers .423-to-.061. Concordia led 3-1 to open the set, and the Cavs held their last lead at 7-6 before the Raiders rattled off six consecutive points as part of a 10-2 run to pull ahead 16-9. After CU earned two of the next three points SOU closed the set on an 8-2 run, clinching the opening set 25-13 on a
Liz Madden (Manson, Wash./Manson) kill.
Southern Oregon took an early 6-3 lead in the second set, only to watch Concordia score five straight points on the Cavs' way to a 13-10 advantage. From that point it was all SOU, as the Raiders used a 15-4 run to turn the three-point deficit into an eight-point victory at 25-17, with
Sarah Holgen (Honolulu, Hawaii/Ashland)'s kill picking up the final point.
The final set required a huge comeback for Southern Oregon, as Concordia took an eight-point lead at 17-9 and again at 18-10. It appeared as if the Cavaliers would force a fourth game, but the Raiders stormed back to take a 22-21 lead following a 12-3 run. Concordia followed a timeout with back-to-back points to reclaim the lead at 23-22, but a
Megan Bartling (Medford, Ore./North Medford) kill tied it at 23-23 and a pair of Holgen kills earned the set and match victory for the visitors.
Holgen finished with a match-high 18 kills and .469 attack percentage, while also adding 12 digs to earn the double-double.
Natalie Scheller (Bend, Ore./Bend) reached double-digits with 10 kills on a .455 attack percentage, while Bartling and Haley Fikso combined for 15 block assists as the Raiders totaled 11 team blocks in the match.
Aria Nojima led CU with 10 kills, and Lindsay Mangan tallied a match-high 26 assists, with
Caryn Westrick (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake) finishing one behind at 25.
Becky Johnstone (Lake Arrowhead, Calif./Rim of the World)'s 14 digs were the most for either team, and
Renee Yomtob (Boise, Idaho/Centennial) added 10 digs for SOU.
