Two Raiders Earn Championships at SOU Open

Top-ranked Southern Oregon finished with two champions and eight total placers as the 2011 SOU Open wrapped up Sunday afternoon at Bob Riehm Arena.

Mitchell Lofstedt (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) swept his way through three matches to pick up the title in the 125-pound weight class. He pinned Gabe Goodrich from Clackamas C.C. in 2:12 in the first round and pinned Highline C.C.'s Steven Romero in the semi-final. Lofstedt closed out the championship with an 11-0 major decision victory over Pat Rollins from Oregon State.

Austin Vanderford (Ninilchik, Alaska/Ninilchik) earned the Raiders' second championship of the weekend when he won all three of his bouts to take the 184-pound title. Vanderford pinned Pacific's Caleb Malycheaskake in 1:20 in his first match, pinned Oregon State's Bryan Engdahl in the semi-final and won the title with a 15-6 major decision victory over Simon Fraser's Clete Hanson. Vanderford also earned the Oustanding Wrestler of the Tournament title for his performance in winning the 184 championship.

Six other SOU wrestlers placed in the weekend event. Kyle Wirkuty (Portland, Ore./Centennial) took third in the 149, with Jimmy Eggemeyer (Kodiak, Alaska/Kodiak) finishing fifth. Dalton Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) placed third in the 157, with Brock Crocker (Sweet Home, Ore./Sweet Home) finishing fifth. Finally Derek Mestrovich (Boise, Idaho/Skyview) (174) and Ethan Hinton (Sequim, Wash./Sequim) (197) each placed fifth in his weight class.

The Raiders return to action with a pair of road duals this week. Southern Oregon will visit University of Great Falls on Thursday before traveling to Havre, Mont., to take on MSU-Northern on Friday. Both duals are set for 7 p.m. (M.S.T.)
