ASHLAND, Ore. – The No. 1-ranked Southern Oregon wrestling team's 2011-12 season got off to a rough start Saturday afternoon as Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) upset the Raiders 28-16 at Bob Riehm Arena.

The Raiders fall to 0-1 on the season, while Embry-Riddle improves to 1-0. Southern Oregon returns to action tomorrow, when the Raiders travel to Forest Grove, Ore., to compete in the Pacific Open.

Embry-Riddle won the first three matches and defeated the Raiders in all but three matches in the dual to pull off the upset. Kyle Wirkuty (Portland, Ore./Centennial), competing in the 149-pound weight class, defeated No. 12 Matt Hamilton 15-5 to earn the Raiders' first match victory in the fourth match of the day. Fourth-ranked Austin Vanderford (Ninilchik, Alaska/Ninilchik) pinned Jonathan Castellow in 2:34 to win the 184 class, and No. 6 Bubba Owens (Tillamook, Ore./) pinned Garret Foster in 1:48 to earn the victory in the heavyweight class.
