Lofstedt Leads Group of Four SOU Placers at Reno Tournament of Champions

Southern Oregon finished with 39 points to place 11th overall with four placers at the 2011 Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday.

Mitchell Lofsted led the way for the Raiders with a third-place finish in the 125-pound bracket. Lofstedt, ranked fourth in the bracket, defeated Riley Miller (MSU-Northern) by 17-0 technical fall in the opening round and took down Stanford's Matt Sencenbaugh 13-2 in the next round.

He decisioned Tyler Iwamura (CSU Bakersfield) 5-2 in the quarterfinals before falling to top-ranked Jon Morrison (Oklahoma State) 10-2 in the semi-finals. Lofstedt rebounded to pin Air Force's Greg Rinker in 2:01 in the wrestleback semi-finals and decisioned second-ranked Michael Martinez (Wyoming) 3-2 in the third-place bout.

Three SOU wrestlers earned sixth place as Kyle Wirkuty (Portland, Ore./Centennial) (141), Jimmy Eggemeyer (Kodiak, Alaska/Kodiak) (149) and Brock Gutches (Central Point, Ore./Crater) (174) each made it to the fifth-place bout before falling in the final round.

Oklahoma State, the second-ranked team in NCAA Div. I, earned the tournament title with 166 total points and four individual champions. Defending-champion Wyoming finished second with 115.5 points and one individual title. Oregon State placed third with 105 points, followed by Binghamton (68.5), Michigan State (66), California Poly (57.5), West Virginia (52.5), Ohio (48), Air Force (47.5) and Boise State (44.5) to round out the top 10.

The Raiders finished ahead of Pac-12 programs Arizona State and No. 12 Stanford, along with higher-division programs Appalachian State and CSU Bakersfield.
