Wrestlers Look For 3-Peat At Regionals

The Southern Oregon wrestling team heads to Prescott, Ariz. Saturday for the annual NAIA West Qualifying tournament, looking for its third straight team title.

The Raiders won the team title in both 2009 and 2010 and then went on to finish second at the NAIA National Championships both years.

"This is by far the deepest regional we've ever attended," SOU head coach Mike Ritchey said. "The key is going to be making sure we get a lot of bonus points if we want to win it."

Southern Oregon enters the tournament ranked 10th in the Nation, but that leaves them as the fourth-highest ranked team in the tournament. Great Falls is ranked sixth, Montana State-Northern is ranked eighth and Menlo is ranked ninth.

Seeding won't be done until Friday night, but it looks like the Raiders should have two top seeds in the tournament.

Austin Vanderford (Ninilchik, Alaska/Ninilchik) is ranked second in the NAIA at 174 and should be the top seed in that weight class and Jared Dagleish is ranked third at 133 and should be the top seed at 133.

Vanderford is 26-3 on the season to lead the Raiders.

Also making the trip for the Raiders will be Tyler Lander (Roseurg, Ore./Roseburg) (125), Kyle Wirkuty (Portland, Ore./Centennial) (141), Justin Eldred (Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass) (141), Jimmy Eggemeyer (Kodiak, Alaska/Kodiak) (149), Tommie Hooper (Burns, Ore./Burns) (157), Justin Mills (Lakeport, Calif./Clear Lake) (157), Tucker Van Matre (Kodiak, Alaska/Kodiak) (165), Tyler Thomas (Salem, Ore./McKay) (174), Ron Lee (184) and Derek Rottenberg (Red Bluff, Calif./Red Bluff) (184).

All the Raiders wrestling have already qualified for the NAIA National Championships except Lander and Van Matre. Lander and Van Matre will need to finish in the top four to qualify.
