The 11th-ranked Southern Oregon wrestling team won six of the first seven matches and cruised to a 25-12 victory over ninth-ranked Montana State-Northern tonight at Riehm Arena.
The Raiders wrap up the regular season with a 9-5 dual meet record. Southern Oregon will take part in the NAIA Western Regional Championships Feb. 19-20.
Southern Oregon jumped out to a 13-0 lead after the first four matches. The Raiders received a forfeit and 125 pounds to open the match and then third-ranked
Jared Dalgleish (Kelso, Wash./Kelso) scored a 13-4 major decision at 133 to push the lead up to 10-0.
At 141, 11th-ranked
Kyle Wirkuty (Portland, Ore./Centennial) scored a takedown with 15 seconds left in the match for a thrilling 6-4 decision.
MSU-Northern got on the board at 149 when second-ranked Anthony Weerheim scored a 3-1 decision.
Southern Oregon then went on to win the next three matches with decisions by
Justin Mills (Lakeport, Calif./Clear Lake) (157),
Tucker Van Matre (Kodiak, Alaska/Kodiak) (165) and second-ranked
Austin Vanderford (Ninilchik, Alaska/Ninilchik) (174).
After second-ranked Evan Hinebauch scored a victory for the Lights at 184,
Derek Rottenberg (Red Bluff, Calif./Red Bluff) got the Raiders rolling again with a 7-2 victory at 197.
Tonight was the dedication ceremony for Bob Riehm Arena. The gym inside McNeal Pavilion is now named after the famous and long-time SOU wrestling coach.
