ASHLAND, Ore. – Key defensive plays on the first and last plays of the game earned Southern Oregon its first win of the season, 15-10 over Webber International Friday afternoon at Raider Stadium.
With the win, Southern Oregon improved to 1-3 overall this season. Webber International falls to 0-3 with the loss.
The Southern Oregon defense capitalized on Webber International blunders and made key plays to earn the win for the Raiders. On the first play from scrimmage,
Ra Sjeon Hines (Antioch, Calif./Antioch) stripped the ball from Webber receiver Brayun Andrews, taking the fumble 43 yards for the touchdown to give SOU the 7-0 lead.
The Raiders picked up two more points later in the first period when Webber's fourth-down snap sailed over the head of the Warrior punter Adam Riley, back 29 yards into the endzone. Riley recovered the ball in the endzone, but
Matt Brown (Davis, Calif./Davis) tackled him to earn the safety and give SOU a 9-0 advantage.
Webber's first scoring drive came on a short field following an
Austin Dodge (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview) interception. Less than one minute into the third quarter, Nate Keller picked off Dodge's pass at the SOU 45-yardline, returning the ball to the SOU 40. Eleven plays and two fourth-down conversions later, Webber quarterback Torrance Moise pushed up the middle for the one-yard score.
The Warriors took a brief lead on their next possession. After the Webber defense stopped
Marshawn Friloux (Bellflower, Calif./Bellflower) on fourth-and-two at the SOU 30, the Warrior offense made it to the SOU five-yardline before the Raider defense held and foced a WIU field goal. Mason Prater's kick split the uprights to put the visitors up 10-9 with 4:15 remaining in the third quarter.
Southern Oregon's offense responded to its first deficit of the contest, sparked by
Patrick Donahue (Los Angeles, Calif./Franklin)'s 61-yard kickoff return to put together a 35-yard touchdown drive. Dodge's 27-yard pass to
Mike Olson (Colfax, Calif./Colfax) brought the Raiders to within one yard of the endzone, but Olson was ruled down just short of the touchdown.
On third-and-goal,
Manny Barragan (Yreka, Calif./Yreka) rushed up the middle for the eventual game-winning score to give the Raiders the 15-0 lead. A two-point conversion pass from Dodge sailed long, keeping SOU from stretching its advantage to seven points.
Webber International's final drive started at the WIU 22-yardline with 1:36 remaining in the game and no timeouts. The Warriors made it to the SOU 38, but
Michael Springer (El Dorado, Calif./Union Mine) intercepted Moise's pass at the 18-yardline with eight seconds remaining to clinch the victory for the Raiders.
Southern Oregon finished the game with 230 total offensive yards, with Webber International tallying 210 yards. The teams combined for 19 penalties totaling almost 160 yards, and also finished with seven combined fumbles, with five lost. Springer finished with a game-high 11 tackles to go with his game-clinching interception.
Daniel Breaux (Greenfield, Calif./Greenfield) added a game-high two tackles-for-loss, with 1.5 sacks.
The Raiders return to action next week when they travel to Atherton, Calif., to face Menlo with kickoff scheduled for noon.
