Box Score SALEM – The Southern Oregon volleyball team picked up its 20th consecutive win against Corban Friday night, sweeping the Warriors by set scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-17 to earn the Cascade Collegiate Conference win at Jeffer Sports Center.
Southern Oregon improves to 15-8 overall and 11-2 in conference play, while Corban falls to 3-17 overall and 1-13 in the CCC. The Raiders return to action Saturday afternoon, when they will travel to Eugene for a 1 p.m. conference matchup with Northwest Christian.
Mona Goudarzian (Albany, Ore./West Albany) led Southern Oregon with 10 kills, while
Haley Kasler (Grants Pass, Ore./Hidden Valley) added eight and
Liz Madden (Manson, Wash./Manson) tallied seven.
Caryn Westrick (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake) finished with a team-high 17 assists and
Renee Yomtob (Boise, Idaho/Centennial) posted 13 digs. The Raiders hit only .174 as a team in the match but used eight total blocks to help earn the win. Chandra Teague's 15 kills led both teams, as did Katherine Salness' 29 assists.
The Raiders used an early 6-1 run to take a quick lead in the first set, but Corban slowly worked its way back and tied it up at 13-13 on a block by Jenny Harman. The set remained close the rest of the way, with the Warriors hanging one back at 24-23 before a kill by Madden clinched the victory.
The second set featured 12 tie scores and a pair of lead changes as neither team led by more than three points the entire way. Corban actually held a late advantage when back-to-back kills by Teague gave the Warriors a 21-18 lead, but the Raiders scored the next three points to tie it up and earned a set-point advantage on a kill by Kasler. Corban scored the next point to tie it up at 24-apiece, but the Raiders got consecutive kills by Madden and Goudarzian to take a 2-0 match lead.
Southern Oregon scored six straight points early in the third set, and when Corban pulled within two at 12-10 the Raiders used a five-point streak to stretch their lead back to seven points. The teams exchanged points the rest of the way, and SOU closed out the match sweep on a kill by
Sam Boehnke (Ashland, Ore./Ashland).
