Conference Title On the Line in Saturday's NAIA Game of the Week

ASHLAND – Another NAIA Football Game of the Week highlights Southern Oregon's final game of the 2012 regular season, as the 12th-ranked Raiders host No. 7 Montana Tech Saturday at 1 p.m. at Raider Stadium with the Frontier Conference title on the line.

Fans who can't make it to the stadium can follow the action with live stats and video by following the links on the SOU website, and anyone who lives in southern Oregon or northern California can also view the game broadcast on KDRV Newswatch 12+, available over the air on channel 12.2, Charter Cable channel 291, Ashland TV channel 12.2 and Northland Cable System channel 137.

Southern Oregon, 7-2 this season, is looking to earn a season split with Montana Tech, 8-1, after the Diggers outlasted SOU 48-45 in double overtime earlier this season in Butte. An SOU win would clinch a share of the Frontier Conference championship, while a Montana Tech win would give the Diggers the outright title.

“It's a huge game with playoff implications and the Frontier Conference title on the line,” SOU head coach Craig Howard said. “We expect a great game by both teams.”

Saturday's game pairs the two hottest teams in the Frontier Conference, as Montana Tech has won eight consecutive games following a season-opening loss, while the Raiders have won five straight since the loss to the Diggers.

With Saturday's game concluding the 2012 regular season schedule, the Raiders will honor the 13 graduating seniors on this year's squad in a ceremony prior to kickoff.

“These seniors have done a great job for our program, and we certainly want them to have a special day at Raider Stadium in their final home regular season appearance,” Howard said.

Southern Oregon will also celebrate Veterans Day by offering free admission to all veterans with proper military identification as a sign of appreciation for all they've done by serving our country.

Southern Oregon looks to continue its prolific offensive performance as it closes out the regular season in anticipation of its first NAIA Postseason berth since 2002. Nine games into the season, Southern Oregon has broken more than 10 team and individual game and season program records, with many more on the horizon. Austin Dodge (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview) has already set new program records for season passing (3,839), completions (266), attempts (402), touchdowns (31) and total offense (3,933). He also has set single-game records with 42 completions against Montana Tech last month and 550 passing yards against Eastern Oregon last week.

Cole McKenzie (Red Bluff, Calif./Red Bluff)'s 1,215 receiving yards are the most in SOU history, breaking a 47-year old program record, and McKenzie's 14 touchdowns are two more than the previous record. Patrick Donahue (Los Angeles, Calif./Franklin) has a school-record 78 receptions, with McKenzie's 68 catches close behind. Colin Amsler (Stevenson Ranch, Calif./West Ranch) has set records for single-game kick scoring (17 points against MSU-Northern) and single-game PAT conversions (nine against Montana Western and Eastern Oregon), and his 56 season PATs are a new SOU record.

As a team, the Raiders set new single-game yardage marks in three consecutive games, topping out at 731 yards three weeks ago against Montana Western, and they've also set a new single-game scoring mark (76 against Montana Western). The Raiders' 498 total points this season are 24 more than the 2001 team's previous program record of 474, and SOU's 5,873 offensive yards breaks the old team record by more than 1,300 yards. The Raiders' 4,148 passing yards surpasses the record of 3,420 set way back in 1965. On top of all of these team records, the Raiders are currently on pace to set NAIA season records for offensive yards per game (652.6) and points per game (55.3).

Since Howard took over as head coach prior to last season, the Raiders are undefeated at home. Southern Oregon's eight-game win streak is the longest such streak since the 1961-63 teams won 10 straight at home. With the Raiders looking to make it nine straight on Saturday, Howard knows Montana Tech will pose a daunting challenge.

“Montana Tech is a good football team, well-coached, and they come in here with an 8-1 record,” Howard said. “This matchup on Saturday is a key Frontier Conference matchup and it should be a great football game.”

Montana Tech has outscored its opponents 238-141 during the current eight-game win streak, scoring a season-high 48 points in their double-overtime victory over SOU in Butte on Sept. 29. Montana Tech boasts one of the nation's best pass rushes, ranking second in the nation with an average of 3.7 sacks per game, led by Jacob Workman's nine total sacks.

The Diggers' pass offense ranks among the nation's top 10, averaging 274.9 yards per contest. Quarterback Nick Baker leads the passing offense with 2,403 yards and 23 touchdowns while completing 69.1 percent of his passes. Pat Hansen leads the rushing attack with 923 total yards on 200 carries with 13 touchdowns, and he's added 36 receptions for 208 yards. Mike Touzinsky leads the defense with 51 solo and 24 assisted tackles, including 13.5 for loss and four sacks.

Southern Oregon have extra motivation against Montana Tech beyond even the conference title hopes. The Diggers have beaten SOU in double-overtime in Butte during each of the past two seasons, with this year's loss sparking a five-game win streak that has seen the SOU offense average more than 700 yards per contest.

Two weeks after SOU upset then-No. 6 Carroll in a National Game of the Week, the Raiders will have a chance pull another upset Saturday afternoon in Ashland.
