Raiders Fall in Four Sets to Eastern Oregon in CCC Semifinals

Box Score CALDWELL, Idaho – Southern Oregon's quest for a third consecutive Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball tournament championship came to an end Friday evening as second-seeded Eastern Oregon defeated third-seeded SOU 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 18-25, 25-21) in a tournament semifinal match at J.A. Albertson Center.

Southern Oregon falls to 19-11 this season, while Eastern Oregon improves to 23-6 and advances to Saturday's tournament championship match against the winner of Friday night's semifinal match between College of Idaho and Concordia.

Natalie Scheller (Bend, Ore./Bend) finished with a team-high 16 kills in the loss, while Liz Madden (Manson, Wash./Manson) added eight for the Raiders. Renee Yomtob (Boise, Idaho/Centennial) tallied 29 digs to reach 615 for the season, the second-highest total in SOU history behind Kristen Lilly's 619 in 2004. Rebecca Haight posted a match-best 20 kills and Stefani Sorensen added 15 for the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers hit .263 as a team for the match, while limiting the Raiders to a .139 attack percentage. Southern Oregon remained close until late, when Eastern Oregon scored three straight points to take a six-point lead at 20-14. The teams exchanged points the rest of the way, but an SOU attack error closed out the 25-18 set victory for Eastern Oregon.

The second set followed a similar script, as SOU rallied from a six-point deficit to pull within one at 15-14. A few minutes later, the Mountaineers scored four straight points to take a 22-17 lead, and back-to-back kills by Haight and Irene Walters clinched a 25-19 set win.

Southern Oregon rallied in the third set, limiting Eastern Oregon to an .057 attack percentage as the Raiders took a 15-9 lead and closed the 25-18 set victory with a 6-2 run. But Eastern Oregon bounced back in the fourth set, storming out to a 16-8 lead before the Raiders started working their way back into the set. A late 6-1 run pulled the Raiders to within two at 23-21 following consecutive kills by Haley Kasler (Grants Pass, Ore./Hidden Valley), but EOU earned the match victory with kills by Haight and Sorenson.
