Third-Ranked Raiders In Second Place After NAIA First Day

DAY ONE RESULTS

DES MOINES, Iowa –
The third-ranked Southern Oregon wrestling team got off to a strong start at the 2012 NAIA National Championships, finishing Thursday's sessions in second place in the team standings and with seven individuals still standing in the championship brackets and three in the consolation brackets.

Southern Oregon has 38.5 points to fall just behind team leader No. 1 Grand View (45), ahead of No. 4 Great Falls (36.5), No. 5 Oklahoma City (33) and No. 5 Montana State-Northern (30). Friday's third session will start at 10 a.m. local time.

Top-ranked Mitchell Lofstedt (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) opened with a pin of Morningside's Alex Rust in 1:51 and defeated Baker's Bo Newport by 16-1 technical fall to advance to the 125-pound quarterfinals. Tenth-ranked Kyle Wirkuty (Portland, Ore./Centennial) picked up a 19-4 technical fall victory over York's Bryan Mango to advance in the 141 but fell to Cambelsville's fifth-ranked Chris Teague by 8-5 decision in the second round.

Fourth-ranked Jimmy Eggemeyer (Kodiak, Alaska/Kodiak) pinned Calumet College of St. Joseph's Dan Reimer in 6:59 to advance in the 149 and reached the quarterfinals following a 12-10 decision over Concordia's Brandon Starkey, and No. 8 Brian Lemmon (Heppner, Ore./) pinned Hannibal-LaGrange's Bryce Alexander in 2:28 to advance in the 165 and reached the quarterfinals with a 10-0 major decision over Indiana Tech's ninth-ranked Conner Lefever.

Tenth-ranked Derek Mestrovic picked up a 15-4 major decision over Bacone's Lee Laxton in the first round of the 165 and earned a 10-2 major decision over Dakota Wesleyan's Danny ninth-ranked Hutcheson in the second round.

Tyler Thomas (Salem, Ore./McKay) advanced in the 174 following a narrow 3-2 victory over Missouri Baptist's Andrew Carter-Johnson, but he fell to Oklahoma City's fourth-ranked Derek Peperas by 14-5 major decision in the second round. Third-ranked Brock Gutches (Central Point, Ore./Crater) pinned Midland's Rowen Stander in 3:50 in the first round and advanced to the quarterfinals with a pin over Shorter's Raleigh Abbott in 4:13.

Third-ranked Austin Vanderford (Ninilchik, Alaska/Ninilchik) pinned Oklahoma City's Teagen Franco in 37 seconds in the 184 and reached the quarterfinals with a 16-1 technical fall over Cumberlands' Scott Stewart. Eighth-ranked Derek Rottenberg (Red Bluff, Calif./Red Bluff) pinned Missouri Valley's Josh Manu in 4:03 in the first round and picked up a 6-1 upset decision over Midland's top-ranked Kody Kersten in the second round.

Bubba Owens (Tillamook, Ore./) picked up a 5-0 victory over Lindsey Wilson's Teddy Furnish to move on in the heavyweight bracket, but he fell to Baker's second-ranked Brandon Gebhardt in 4:30 in the second round.

Tenth-ranked Miguel Baltazar (Culver, Ore./Culver) dropped a close 6-5 decision to Baker's AJ Gassman in the 133 and fell to Lindsey Wilson's Jacob McCombs by 12-0 major decision in the consolation first round. Seventh-ranked Dalton Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) fell by pin to Grand View's 11th-ranked Jimmie Schuessler to drop into the consolation bracket, where he fell to Morningside's Jordan Langley by 12-8 decision.
