ASHLAND –
Southern Oregon scored three touchdowns in its first four plays and pulled away to a 45-7 victory over Dickinson State in Frontier Conference football action Saturday afternoon at Raider Stadium.

Southern Oregon improves to 2-1 overall and in Frontier Conference play, while Dickinson State falls to 1-3. The Raiders return to action next weekend, when they will travel to Butte, Mont., for a conference game against Montana Tech Saturday at 12 p.m. MST.

The Raiders totaled 646 yards – with 496 in the first half – while limiting the Blue Hawks to 178 yards of total offense. Southern Oregon also tallied 31 first downs and surpassed 300 rushing yards with a total of 312 on 74 attempts.

Manny Barragan (Yreka, Calif./Yreka) led SOU with 180 rushing yards on a mere 12 carries with a 91-yard touchdown run. His 15-yard-per-carry average is the second-highest single-game mark in SOU football history, behind only Vic Rust's 16.3 yards per carry against Eastern Oregon in 1992. Barragan also caught one pass for 10 yards.

Patrick Donahue (Los Angeles, Calif./Franklin) caught a pair of long touchdown passes and totaled 125 receiving yards and two scores on four catches. Cole McKenzie (Red Bluff, Calif./Red Bluff) caught six passes for 97 yards. Austin Dodge (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview) completed 16 of 25 pass attempts for 304 yards and four touchdowns with one interception playing less than three quarters before giving way to backup Chris Kammel (Medford, Ore./Phoenix).

For Dickinson State, Dave Velasquez completed eight of 21 pass attempts for 54 yards, and he scored the Blue Hawks' lone touchdown on a rush in the third quarter. Myren Moore totaled 31 rushing yards on 16 carries and James Smith caught six passes for 21 yards.

Southern Oregon won the toss and elected to receive to open the game, and the Raiders took advantage of the opportunity to score early. On the first play of the drive, Dodge delivered a deep pass to Donahue down the left sideline beyond the Dickinson State secondary, and the senior wide receiver sauntered into the end zone for a 61-yard reception less than 20 seconds into the game.

After the Raider defense stopped the Blue Hawk offense, DSU punter Kyle Sanders dropped a punt out of bounds at the SOU 4-yard line. But the long field barely held the SOU offense, as Barragan rushed for five yards on the first play before breaking a 91-yard touchdown run on the second play of the drive to give SOU a 14-0 advantage.

Following a DSU three-and-out, Dodge again found Donahue downfield for a long pass. This time, the sophomore quarterback hit Donahue on a 50-yard scoring toss to put SOU over 200 yards with three scores on four offensive plays in less than five minutes of game time.

The Dickinson defense tightened up after that, forcing fumbles on two of the Raiders' next three drives. Southern Oregon scored its fourth touchdown of the opening half early in the second quarter to conclude a six-play, 80-yard drive. Dodge found Mike Olson (Colfax, Calif./Colfax) for a 15-yard scoring pass to put the Raiders up 28-0, and the quarterback hit Shane Kirkpatrick (Eugene, Ore./North Eugene) from 21 yards out later in the quarter to make it 35-0. A 26-yard Colin Amsler (Stevenson Ranch, Calif./West Ranch) field goal gave SOU a 38-0 lead at halftime.

Dickinson State ended a streak of nine consecutive punts with its first drive of the second half, putting together an 11-play, 85-yard drive to score its lone touchdown of the day. On second-and-eight from the SOU 11-yard line, Velasquez tucked the ball and ran to the left side for the 11-yard score. Kammel came in to quarterback the Raiders midway through the quarter and picked up a one-yard rushing touchdown to give SOU its final points of the game.

The Southern Oregon defense held DSU's offense to seven three-and-outs out of 14 total drives. Kalii Robinson (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey) led SOU with 10 total tackles, and Juwuan Brown (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) finished with three sacks. Brady Hakless led DSU with 10 tackles and also added an interception in the loss.
