Box Score OAKLAND, Calif. – The Southern Oregon offense broke out for four second-half goals as the Raiders defeated Holy Names 5-2 Monday afternoon in nonconference women's soccer action.
Southern Oregon improves to 3-0-1 with the win, while Holy Names drops to 0-2 this season. The Raiders return to action Thursday with an afternoon road match against Simpson in Redding.
Stacy Hamer (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) led the way for SOU with a pair of goals and added an assist in the win, while
Stephanie Carr (Upland, Calif./Upland) tallied her fifth goal of the season.
Sydney Paulsen (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley) and
Serena DeChristofaro (Martinez, Calif./Alhambra) also scored for the Raiders.
Hamer's first goal came in the 40th minute when she dug the ball out of the corner and hit a 20-yard bender into the net for the unassisted score. That would be the only goal of the first half, before the teams combined for six scores after the halftime break.
“We felt we were rushing a bit in the first half, and we didn't really find our feet in the correct tempo until after halftime,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said. “But from that point out, we stroked the ball around really nicely and scored some nice goals.”
Carr scored 10 minutes into the second period, taking a pass from Hamer and knocking it past the HNU goalkeeper for her third goal in the last two matches. Holy Names got on the board with its first goal about 10 minutes later when Britney Machado-Pote found the net, but the Raiders responded less than two minutes later when DeChristofaro passed to Paulsen for the score to put SOU up 3-1.
“I'm particularly proud of the way we responded right away after they scored their first goal,” Clement said.
Just over two minutes after DeChristofaro picked up the assist, the sophomore scored her first goal of the season off a pass from
Julie Zamzow (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly). Hamer's second goal of the match gave SOU three scores in a span of less than five minutes when Paulsen passed to the senior midfielder for the score. Erica Udell gave Holy Names its second goal of the day in the 82nd minute.
“This was a total team effort,” Clement said. “The entire roster got substantial minutes, and I felt like our depth really helped us today on a very warm day. All in all, it was a good weekend, two good victories. I don't think we've played a full 90-minute stretch yet, but we'll be eager to get back on the training ground and get ready for our next one.”
