PORTLAND – Southern Oregon followed a tense five-set win Friday with a much more dominant showing, sweeping Concordia 25-17, 25-20 and 25-14 in Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball action Saturday night at Cavalier Court.
As a team, Southern Oregon hit .490 with 52 kills and only three errors on 100 attempts. The attack percentage marked the highest team match percentage since at least the 2008 season and only the sixth time the team has surpassed the .400 mark in a match during that stretch.
The win pushes SOU back over a .500 winning percentage for the first time since the second day of the season, as the Raiders improve to 7-6 overall and 3-0 in conference play with their fourth straight win. Concordia falls to 5-5 overall and 3-1 in the CCC with the loss. The Raiders return home for their next match, when they will host No. 19 Eastern Oregon in a Friday night conference match at Bob Riehm Arena.
Natalie Scheller (Bend, Ore./Bend) led Southern Oregon with 13 kills and a .650 attack percentage, finishing the match without a single attack error.
Haley Kasler (Grants Pass, Ore./Hidden Valley) also played error-free ball to post 11 kills on 24 attempts.
Caryn Westrick (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake) finished with 23 assists and
Angela Spieker (Bremerton, Wash./Central Kitsap) added 18, while
Renee Yomtob (Boise, Idaho/Centennial) tallied 18 digs. Jackie Stein totaled a match-high 16 kills for Concordia and Melanie Miller added 13. Lindsay Mangan posted 38 assists for the Cavs.
Southern Oregon opened strong in the first set and never looked back. Back-to-back kills by Scheller sandwiched an ace by Brookelyn n Cole as the Raiders scored the first four points of the set. The Raiders stretched their lead to six at 9-3 and never let the Cavaliers come closer than three points the rest of the way. Following a kill by Miller that pulled CU to 11-8, the Raiders used an 8-2 run to jump ahead 19-10. After three straight points by the Cavs,
Sam Boehnke (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) clinched the 25-17 set with a kill.
Concordia scored the first two points of the second set and hung even for the first 20 points. With the Raiders nursing a slim 11-10 lead, a Goudarzian kill sparked a 5-1 SOU run that gave the visitors some breathing room. The teams essentially exchanged points the rest of the way, and CU battled off set point three straight times to prompt an SOU timeout, but another Goudarzian kill sealed the 25-20 victory.
The third set was all Raiders from the start. For the second time in the match, Southern Oregon pulled ahead to a 9-3 early lead. This time, however, SOU continued to pull away. Southern Oregon reached 20 points while Concordia still sat in single digits at nine, and a block by Scheller and
Sam Boehnke (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) finished off the 25-14 set win and the match sweep for SOU.
