FOREST GROVE – With all but two of second-ranked Southern Oregon's starting lineup getting the night off, Pacific ended a 20-match losing streak to the Raiders by knocking off SOU 27-28 Thursday night at the Stoller Center.
Southern Oregon falls to 8-3 in duals this season, with Pacific improving to 6-6. The loss is only SOU's sixth all-time against Pacific to go against 50 wins for the Raiders. Southern Oregon returns to action Sunday at the Boxer Open in Forest Grove.
The teams swapped forfeits in the first two matchups, with Pacific winning five of the eight contested matchups. Ryan Baxter took down
Woong Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kalani) with a 12-1 major decision victory in the 141 before
Trinity Castner (Winston, Ore./Douglas) and
Craig Trask (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) picked up decision victories in the 149 and 157 to give SOU a 12-10 lead.
That would prove to be the Raiders' only advantage of the night, as Pacific won the next four matchups to claim the dual victory. Bruce Balcita put the Boxers on top for good 14-12 with a 12-2 major decision win over
Reed Tennyson (Dillingham, Alaska/Dillingham) in the 165 and Michael Tyner knocked off T.J. Callaway 5-2 in the 174.
Chris Harlin earned a forfeit victory in the 184 and Caleb Malychewski's 12-1 major decision victory over
Ethan Hinton (Sequim, Wash./Sequim) clinched Pacific's first dual victory over Southern Oregon since the 1999-2000 season. Twelfth-ranked
Bubba Owens (Tillamook, Ore./) ended the night on a positive note for the Raiders with a 53-second pin of Evan Schreurs to claim the heavyweight matchup and push the final tally to 27-18.
