SPOKANE, Wash. Garrett Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) was the highest placer Sunday for the seventh-ranked Southern Oregon University wrestling team, capturing fourth place at the Spokane Open.

Urrutia, in the 165-pound class, lost a first-round decision but went on to advance to the third-place match with five straight wins. Included were a technical fall and a pin, and in the consolation semifinals Urrutia defeated Pacific University's Bruce Balcita, 5-2, before North Idaho's Tyler McLean pinned him for third.

Chris Berg (Ukiah, Calif./Ukiah) (197) and Cody Jones (Dallas, Ore./Dallas) (174) were SOU's other placers, earning fifth and sixth. Berg went 4-2 on the day, which was capped by a win by injury default, and Jones took an 11-6 quarterfinal decision from North Idaho's Johnathen Dennis before dropping his last three.

Montana State-Northern won the team title, edging North Idaho, and SOU was 10th out of 24 schools that were represented.

The Raiders competed without several of their top wrestlers.

They're off now for four weeks. They host a dual against Simpson on Dec. 19 and against Clackamas and Simon Fraser on Dec. 20 at Bob Riehm Arena.
