RESULTS
DES MOINES – Second-ranked Southern Oregon concluded the first day of competition in a tight race with Grand View and Montana State-Northern for the top spot and with four wrestlers still competing for individual titles at the NAIA Wrestling Championships.
Top-ranked
Mitchell Lofstedt (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) led the way with three quick pins to advance to Saturday's semifinals. The defending champion 125-pounder totaled 3:51 in three pins as he aims for his third career title.
Third-ranked
Prescott Garner (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) advances to Saturday's 133-pound semifinal round after three easy wins on Friday. Garner earned a technical fall victory in the opening round before picking up major decision wins in the second round and the quarterfinals.
Second-ranked
Jimmy Eggemeyer (Kodiak, Alaska/Kodiak) earned a pair of decision wins in the 149-pound bracket and will compete in the semifinals on Saturday. Top-ranked
Brock Gutches (Central Point, Ore./Crater) pinned his first opponent and claimed a decision victory in the quarterfinals as he looks to defend his 2012 title in the 174.
A pair of Raiders advanced to the quarterfinal round before dropping their first matches.
Derek Mestrovich (Boise, Idaho/Skyview) claimed a decision win in his first contest before dropping a 10-2 major decision to Grand View's second-ranked Jimmie Schuessler. Seventh-ranked
Bubba Owens (Tillamook, Ore./) won a narrow opening matchup by a tiebreaker before losing a 12-3 major decision to third-ranked Jose Lopez from Dickinson State.
Saturday's competition is slated to begin at 10 a.m. CST at the Jacobson Exhibition Center.
