Streaking SOU bottles up Evergreen in straight sets

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Southern Oregon's hex on the Evergreen volleyball team is alive, as are SOU's Cascade Conference title hopes after one completed half of circuit play.

The 13th-ranked Raiders (14-3 overall, 8-1 CCC) swept through the Geoducks (11-10, 2-6) on Saturday at CRC Gymnasium, 25-17, 25-17, 25-21. Their 22nd straight win in the series was driven by Paulla Pinheiro (Fortaleza, Brazil/Colegio Farias Brito)'s 13 kills, seven digs and three aces, and Motade Atanda (San Jose, Calif./Presentation)'s 11 kills and nine digs.

The second half of SOU's conference schedule starts Wednesday at Oregon Tech. At the conclusion of Saturday's action, the Raiders were tied atop the standings with Eastern Oregon and one match ahead of Concordia and College of Idaho.

Aside from the usual success of the Pinheiro-Atanda formula, SOU attacked at a .283 clip as a team. Sam Boehnke (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) spiked seven kills, Emma Gasman (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan) had four, and the Raiders committed only 12 attacking errors and one service error all night.

Lauren McGowne (Coos Bay, Ore./Marshfield) guided the attack – which was especially economical in the second set, when SOU had 12 kills on 22 attempts – with 32 assists and five digs.

Evergreen had a lead early in that second frame, but the Raiders squashed it with a quick 9-2 run. The Geoducks also kept it tight in the third until two Gasman kills and an attacking hiccup gave the Raiders all the cushion they needed at 19-16.

Brandee Victorino had nine kills for the Geoducks, who toiled to a .138 average that pulled down by .081 and .091 marks in the first and third sets.

Pinheiro reached the 10-kill mark in six of her first 10 matches to start the season, but has been at 13 or more in all seven since. Atanda has been in double figures in eight of SOU's last nine.
